Image Description, by
This screenshot was taken from a demo I am still putting the finishing touches
to. Heavily inspired by Mutant Storm (www.pompom.org.uk) and Break Ball 2
(www.breakball2.com), I've tried to take the classic Arkanoid into the 21st
century. It runs on Windows 2000/XP and uses
OpenGL & DevIL for graphics,
FMOD for sound,
DirectInput for keyboard & mouse,
UnRARLib for pak file stuff,
and NSIS for the install application.
You can download and play the game from http://aggrav8d.cfxweb.net/ or by going
directly to http://www.cfxweb.net/~aggrav8d/downloads/ifreakout.exe
It is interesting to note that the first version of the game took 4 hours to get
up and running.
It took nearly a week to get all the major features in (sound, particles, menu).
It has taken me two months to tweak it into what you see here.
(including time for real life and a variety of other side projects)
I have learned a lot about just how hard it is to put one of these things
together, but the top item would be acceptance that there's not much point in
writing really beautiful code full of intricate systems because it's probably
going to get rewritten anyways.
I will continue to make improvements to this demo in the future, time
permitting.
BTW: There is one fairly obvious bug that gets you lots of extra lives. Can you
find it?
(Oh yes, and Greets go out to Sol/Trauma & the wierdos who hang around in
irc.enterthegame.com#flipcode)
